(no subject) [Dec. 19th, 2009|09:20 am]

sanguinary
[mood | amused]

There are 3 terabites worth of hard drive space sitting in my closet. I keep looking in at them and grinning like an idiot, even though I know I only get to keep one 1tb worth. So much hard drive space! Hilariously enough, one tb is for my mother, who has suddenly become semi-computer literate in the past few years. I still have to hold her hand when it comes to simple stuff (who doesn't understand copying and pasting? for the love of god woman, we've had computers in the house since I was 11, and ones with GUI interfaces since I was 14!) but she's completely mastered torrents and picture texting and Facebook.

I'm also pretty pumped to go home and get my mom's edits so I can start on the second draft of my book. WHAT THIS? A PROJECT I MAY ACTUALLY FINISH? My dad keeps insisting that now that I've finished my own novel, I have to write him a western (with whores instead of horrors). Preeeeetty sure that if I do write him a western, it will somehow involve hookers killing vampires or Windigos or something equally ridiculous.

Winter Snow

An utterly inconsequential video really, but it is proof that I have discovered how to shoot videos with my camera and upload them to the Internet, which may mean very bad good things later on.

And speaking of multimedia, I discovered today that the complete and unabridged audiobook of Knife as read by British actor Emma Parish is now available for sale. There's a 5-minute sample from the first chapter on that page if you're interested -- the accent she's given Wink is rather adorable, IMO!

And finally, I have decided that SWIFT (book #4 in my faery series) will be set in Cornwall, land of my maternal ancestors, and that I ought to go there as soon as possible in the interests of eating pasties and saffron buns until I asplode research. Whether this will actually happen is anyone's guess, but I like to think about it, you know?

Windows 7 Woes [Dec. 17th, 2009|11:18 pm]

I had to get a new computer and now have the Windows 7 operating system. I was devastated when I found it didn't come with Windows Movie Maker. I have tried tracking down the program but it seems every download I find goes through the windows update and will not work. Is there anywhere to find just Windows Movie Maker?

If not I'll need another movie making program if I want to get back to vidding. (I'm in withdraw now) Are there any good free ones out there?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

2 Vid Rec Requests - Classic Hollywood and Emotional Irony [Dec. 15th, 2009|06:20 pm]

vidding

[zephyrprince]
I am looking for recommendations on two kinds of vids.

The first one might seem a little odd, but I am looking for vids whose song feels ironic in that it seems not to match up to what is shown - like it's upbeat but the images are brutal or it's placid though the images are frightening so that the viewer is dealing with a sort of cognitive dissonance between their eyes and their ears. Does that make any sense? I'll clarify if not. I think the music probably has to be on the lighter side of things and the images on the darker side of the emotional range for it to work out the way I am thinking because when the image is disturbing and the music is happy, it forces the viewer to rethink the music and read it as eerie or strange whereas if the image is light and happy and the music is shocking, we're more likely to use the song like we usually do in vidding to re-read the images and read something sinister into an otherwise unquestioned situation in the visual source. I'm not sure why that difference is. I'm not sure anyone's going to understand this but I have a sort of idea germinating and I'm trying to nurture it.

My other request is for any and all vids based on classical Hollywood movies especially anything slash or femmeslash. I have seen "Clair de Lune" and am interested in seeing others.

Just a reminder that the Escapade convention's 20th anniversary is coming up on Feb. 26, and that means VID SHOW! Vid upload is scheduled to open on Jan. 1 if everything goes according to plan, and the deadline for final submissions will be Jan. 22, 2010.

We'd love to see vids from both attending and non-attending vidders. The con itself is a slash con, but vids of all stripes are welcomed, and we're especially excited about having new vids to show -- but if you have an existing vid you think might be great for the show, please do send it along, as vids don't have to be premiering only.

For information on how to send them and all the technical gory details, head on over to the Escapade Songvid Show page at http://escapadecon.net/?page_id=8 and click on the vidshow instructions link.

We'd love to have a wide variety of fandoms and vidders for our 20th anniversary show, so we hope you'll join us this year and help make it a great night.

The Peter Wingfield Fan Club is hosting the second vid contest at the upcoming San Antonio Road Trip. This is a very small con (probably no more than 100 attendees) so it combines the best of two worlds: a friendly fan-run con and a con with a fantastic guest of honor - Peter.

Music: Fanfare by Black Violin
Notes: [info]mistojen and I, after commiserating over our long, long, vidding dry spells over at [info]sisabet's Vidder Poor Me Meme, decided to challenge each other with very short clips of songs to see if we could actually vid again. We both decided to pick source footage that we had little to no "emotional attachment" to, in order to make the process as painless as possible. This is what I made.

Doctor of Death - Scrubs/Criminal Minds crossover trailer [Dec. 13th, 2009|03:19 pm]
vidding
[vyperman7]
This is a fake movie trailer I have created that shows what it would be like if Dr. Cox (John McGinley) from the show Scrubs really lead a secret life as a serial killer. Watch as the Criminal Minds team takes on their toughest case to date trying to catch an unstoppable Dr. Cox.

** The concept of the trailer is featured after films like The Stepfather and Mr. Brooks where a seemingly nice and trust-worthy guy can be hiding a deadly secret. I originally came by this idea almost two years ago when I saw John McGinley star in a TV movie called "Intensity" in which he plays a serial killer. It got me to thinking "what if Dr. Cox was really a killer" and the rest went from there. Various material is used from Scrubs, Criminal Minds, Intensity, and others.

DIY II: Electric Bugaloo. Recs Needed!! [Dec. 13th, 2009|05:38 pm]

vidding

[francescacoppa]
Some of you might remember that [info]laurashapiro and I curated an exhibition of vids for 24/7 — A DIY Video Summit at USC Film School last year. A number of you even turned up (check out the photo of us on the event page)! This event brought vidders together with amv makers, political remix video creators, vloggers, machinima makers, and other independent video artists.

Anyway, we've just been asked to help curate a sequel exhibition, which will be online only. In particular, they've asked for

* about 30 minutes of vids
* made/released in 2008 and 2009
* 'the most innovative' and 'best hits' (whatever that means) in the genre for the past two years
* can include 'meta' vids about the genre but need not be restricted to that type

Obviously I've got a number of ideas of what to include, but I'm afraid I'll miss something awesome! I'm also after a multiplicity/diversity of fandoms and vidders. (In case you're wondering, yes, I'll totally be seeking vidders' permission to be included, so I'll also need a few extra in case people don't want to be included.)

If there's a vid that springs to mind--awesome, made within the last two years--could you drop me a line or leave a comment? Many many thanks!

Saffron Cake [Dec. 13th, 2009|04:12 pm]

rj_anderson
[Tags|]
[mood | hopeful]

At this rate, people are going to expect my next publication to be a cookbook! But [info]patty1943 asked for the recipe after seeing my icon, so I figured I might as well share it.

I love this cake. It is the essence of Christmas and family to me. Just the smell of my mother baking it makes me deliriously happy, and all my siblings (and her siblings*) feel the same way. Even my three little boys all agree that they like the taste -- which makes me suspect there's something genetic involved, because my husband loathes the stuff and my brothers' wives aren't particularly keen on it either.

All of which is to say that if you don't have Cornish genes in your family, or think that the combination of saffron, candied peel and currants tastes like medicine (as my husband does), this cake may not be for you. Furthermore, Spanish saffron threads are wickedly expensive, so you have to be pretty committed to even tackle this recipe in the first place (which is why my mother, like my grandmother before her, only makes it once a year).

Nevertheless, it's unlike any other fruit cake you will ever eat -- a dense and slightly moist (but not soggy like traditional Christmas fruitcake) golden loaf, lightly sprinkled with currents and bits of candied peel, seasoned with the most expensive spice in the world yet at the same time homey and unassuming, as one might expect of a Cornish delicacy. It does not require icing, or jam, or even butter -- in Cornwall it's sometimes made into buns and served with clotted cream, but to me even this seems unnecessary. Just a thick slice warm from the oven (or slightly heated in the microwave) and a cup of tea to go with it is all you really need.

One last caveat: this is a bulk recipe that makes five generous loaves, and I am an idiot when it comes to math, so I won't subject you to my clumsy attempts at downsizing it. If you've got this far, you'll have to do that yourself. :)

A Traditional Cornish Recipe for Saffron Cake )

If anyone does decide to tackle this enterprise, let me know how it turns out. Especially if you figure out how to convert it to a smaller quantity.

--
* I am not kidding. One year when my mother mailed my uncle George his Christmas loaf, he composed a lengthy poem on the subject of his love for Saffron Cake and sent it back to her as a thank-you note. Not a bad poem either: it both rhymed and scanned. My mother had it laminated.
